Sustainable agriculture and agroforestry can contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 2 on hunger. This is highlighted by Vi Agroforestry during the Committee on World Food Security in Rome.

The focus of this year’s commission on food security is nutrition. After declining for several decades, world hunger is increasing again. 820 million people do not have enough to eat. One of the reasons is climate change that affects agricultural production.  Agroforestry, where trees are planted among crops, can provide a variety of food options, contribute to nutrition and create resilience to climate change related challenges, says Vi Agroforestry International Director, Maria Schultz.

Scale-up agroforestry

During the meeting, Vi Agroforestry is participating in the side event “Agroforestry, an agro-ecological pathway for SDG2: A multi-stakeholder event to discuss ways to scale-up agroforestry”, moderated by Maria Schultz. Caroline Musee from Vi Agroforestry in Kenya, participates in the panel. The event gathers a multi-stakeholder panel to discuss, in the perspective of the High Level Panel of Experts report and the Committee on Food Security, opportunities, but also challenges, to scale-up agroforestry.

The objective will be to share experiences, lessons learned and solutions in terms of technical, institutional, and policy support to the development of agroforestry. The event is a joint effort of The CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA), The Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative (SIANI) and the Agroforestry Network.
