Vi Agroforestry will be attending this year’s climate summit, COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Invited by Kenya’s Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, we will participate in a session where agroforestry is highlighted as a vital strategy for achieving Kenya's climate goals.

“Being invited to the meeting is an acknowledgment from the Kenyan government of Vi Agroforestry as a reliable partner in the work for climate and sustainable development,” says Matilda Palm, Environmental, Climate, and Agroforestry Advisor at Vi Agroforestry and one of the representatives attending COP29 on behalf of the organization.

The meeting, titled “Agroforestry as a Driving Force for NDC Achievement – Good Practices for Livelihood Improvement, Gender, and Social Inclusion”, will take place in the pavilion of Kenya’s national focal point for the country’s climate commitments (NDC). Vi Agroforestry will participate as both a presenter and panel member, providing a unique platform to showcase the organization’s expertise in agroforestry and landscape restoration. Monica Nderitu, Regional Environment and Climate Change Advisor at Vi Agroforestry will participate in the panel.

Focusing on Agroforestry to Achieve Climate Goals

Kenya’s climate commitment includes a target to reduce emissions by 32% by 2030. Part of the strategy to reach this goal is the restoration of landscapes and ecosystems, where agroforestry plays a significant role. During the session, Kenya, in collaboration with other countries and organizations, will demonstrate how agroforestry solutions can contribute to achieving climate goals. Special emphasis will be placed on gender equality, social justice, financing through nature-based solutions, and carbon markets. Representatives from Japan, Costa Rica, Sweden, and Mozambique will also be in attendance.

“Vi Agroforestry has over 40 years of experience in using agroforestry to help trees and people grow in East Africa. We look forward to using our presence at COP29 to help strengthen agroforestry’s role as a sustainable and inclusive path forward for climate, biodiversity, and people living in poverty,” says Charlotta Szczepanowski, Secretary-General of Vi Agroforestry.
