By focusing on agroforestry, gender equality, and climate resilience, the ASILI-B programme drive sustainable development and empower smallholder farmers across East Africa.

The Agroforestry for Sustainable Livelihoods and Biodiversity (ASILI-B) is a five-year initiative (2023-2027) supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). It is being implemented across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania and aims to improve smallholder farmer families’ food and nutrition security, promote gender equality, support resilient livelihoods, and contribute to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.

Key Objectives

The programme directly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life on Land (SDG 15). The main goals are to:

  • Strengthen the capacity of farmer organisations to deliver rights-based services.
  • Increase women’s, youth’s, and underrepresented groups’ participation in leadership.
  • Promote sustainable agricultural enterprises that diversify incomes and increase resilience to climate change.

Core Result Areas

  1. Stronger Farmer Organisations: The programme focuses on building democratic, inclusive farmer organisations, empowering members to take leadership roles.
  2. Sustainable Agriculture & Resilient Livelihoods: It aims to boost farmer incomes, increase access to financial services, and support investment in sustainable agricultural practices.
  3. Climate Change & Biodiversity Conservation: ASILI-B enhances agroecosystems and water conservation practices to increase resilience and biodiversity.
  4. Food and Nutrition Security: The programme promotes diversified and nutritious food production and distribution.
  5. Advocacy: Regional and national advocacy efforts will push for evidence-based policy changes to strengthen agroforestry policies and food security.

Local partners, including farmer organisations and technical experts, will play a central role in implementing and tailoring the programme to meet the specific needs of their communities. The programme also integrates lessons learned from the previous ALIVE programme to refine its strategies and interventions.
